Tips for Making Your Curiosity Quilt

If you've ever made a string quilt, then you'll be a step ahead in making the Curiosity Quilt. It's basically just a more structured string quilt with blocks on a larger scale.

Here are a few tips to make your sewing go smoothly:

1. Make sure your foundation piece is cut accurately.

This is a fairly big piece of fabric, but do your best to cut it as accurately as possible. If it's a bit wonky, your block will turn out a bit wonky too. Some things I do to be as accurate as possible:

Tape Rulers Together

If you have a 20 1/2" square ruler, you're set. If you don't, like me, you can make a Frankenruler:

I use washi tape to stick them together. I also use a piece of tape where I need to line up the ruler so I don't have to do the math each time.

I make another Frankenruler to draw the diagonal lines:

That way I can line up with each corner without having to move the ruler.

Finally, once I've cut, I always remeasure on all sides to make sure it's square and plumb.

2. 43" WOF

This pattern calls for a couple of pieces to be cut at 21 1/2". While we usually assume 42" width of fabric (WOF), most fabric is actually 43" x WOF, but you have to be careful not to cut too much off when you're trimming selvedges. To test this, I measured some AGF and Ruby Star fabrics. Both are right at 43" if you're really careful to trim the bare necessity to trim selvedges. If you've only got 42" to work with, you'll need an additional 1/2 yard of Fabrics B & C.

3. Getting good points

In order to line up the diamonds and get nice sharp points, pin matching fabrics together at the seams when assembling blocks.
